Music is the Mission

Friendships, family and life is the passion

Thank you for being part of our zine.  Tell us more about yourself,  when did you know you wanted to have a career in music?

Hey its an absolute pleasure, thank you for talking to me. Its funny but I knew from a really young age I wanted to be involved in music, I loved singing and playing instruments as a child and always felt that it was always going to play a part in my life in some way. Over the years I've been pretty true to that and have sung for most of my life.

Where are you located and where are you originally from?

I was born in Germany, My Dad was in the Army so we went where he was posted. We moved to Surrey when I was 2 and we stayed there till I was around 5. Our family then settled in Yorkshire and I've been here ever since so I've always considered myself a Yorkshire girl.

Top musical influences?

OMG where do I start? There are so many. I have such a love of 80's music and so many performers from that time, Madonna, George Michael, Alison Moyet, Tear for Fears, the list is endless for me. I honestly have really diverse taste in music and have a huge music collection, everything from Jazz to 70's Metal, disco and funk. I think every genre of music gives me something a little different and I appreciate how much work and dedication goes into producing something artists want to share with others. Having a wide ranging collection means that I can listen to whatever reflects my mood at the time. I do still feel influenced by new artists and love it when I hear something that is fresh and original, I'm totally loving Sigrid and Lizzo at the moment, they're both a real breath of fresh air. Its all about the voice for me, the singer and how they deliver a song.

Goals for 2019 and beyond?

I really want to get my album finished this year. Its been a work in progress for 2 years but its nearing completion and I'm so excited to finally get it out there.  Beyond that I'd love to write for other artists. I have written stuff before and then thought, "you know what, this would really suit ..." I'd be stoked if someone liked my stuff enough to want to record it themselves. Over and above that I'd love to have some of my songs featured in TV and film, so many people get to hear it that way. I'm not saying that I don't want a number one hit, hey who doesn't? but the reality is that unless you are signed to a big label that's never going to happen and you will never get heard on commercial radio playlists. Its a sad fact but true for me and so many of my wonderful unsigned friends.

What have been your specific challenges in music? What have been the greatest achievements so far?

I'm not a great instrumentalist so writing has been a huge learning curve for me. Everything has always been about the lyrics and the melody for me so I have had to develop my skills around how to transfer those into a piece of music whilst getting the right feel for each song. Luckily I have an amazing producer who totally gets me and he has made the process a real joy for me, the studio is fun and I call it my happy place. Having someone who understands where you are coming from and what you are trying to achieve is key for any level of success.

Where can our readers catch up with you out there soon?

If I'm honest I really need to get out there and perform more, I have spent lot of time in the studio over the last couple of years and along with working to pay all the regular bills and the studio fees this hasn't left me much gigging time although I plan to rectify this later in the year. There are projects in progress so I'd love people to follow my social media so they can find out where I'm playing and come along. I'd love to hear from anyone who's been downloading, streaming and listening to my stuff and get their feedback, connecting with people is the biggest thing for me. You can message me on any of my social media or through my website.
