FROM LONDON TO LA
New Single On The Way...
How did you get started in the industry?
I don’t think there was any specific moment where I got started. I was always writing songs and I dabbed in recording here and there as a teenager. Then a couple years ago I met a producer, Jimmy Deer, who I really got along with an we decided to put a few tracks together that really resembled my style. A couple of these tracks were the first I ever put out on streaming platforms. I knew it was time to have my music out there, and everything has sort of escalated upwards since then.
Where are you located and where are you originally from?
I’m from London, UK and I’m here now. But I spend a lot of time in the USA, specifically LA, for my music. I find myself feeling really at home in California, sometimes even more so than in London.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
Lana Del Rey is the first that comes to mind. Her voice and poetic writing style have been a massive inspiration since I was in school. I saw her perform in Rome once and cried like a baby when she came on stage! I was so overwhelmed by being in the same room as such a talented writer and performer.
Another big inspiration to me is Maître Gims. He’s a French rapper. The way he collaborates the French language with these intense, dreamy trap style beats is incredible.
What is your greatest accomplishment yet?
Travelling to the US by myself last year was a big step. I had been before with family, but never alone. I got accepted into a Judy Stakee writing camp in Nashville and decided to make this into a big trip. I did Nashville first and then went to LA to network. It was such a life changing experience being there by myself and meeting all kinds of people. But I’m so proud of myself for doing it, because it resulted in me making some amazing new material including my upcoming single ‘Young God’.
Who are your biggest supporters?
I’d say my mum and my best friend. My mum has been playing my music around the house at any chance she gets. Any time I do a new track or collaboration she’s playing it in the car, in the kitchen, anywhere!
Also, my best friend. We’ve been mates since we were seven years old and have stuck together since. She was the one who made my website and even designed my cover art for my EP and Single. I’m so lucky to have both of them around.
What do you love most about your work?
Not in a creepy way, but I love getting consumed by it. I love the feeling of writing something so meaningful to a beat I’ve been sent or I’m working on with a producer and getting carried away listening to it and vibing with it. It’s so much fun and reminds me why I love the music industry so much.
What is something you have struggled with in your career?
I’ve struggled with the feeling of overwhelm a lot. I look at how many things I could be doing or how many things I need to do. How many people I could collaborate with or how many emails I could be sending. It’s so easy to go down a mental spiral in such a vast and intimidating industry. Learning how to breathe and just take things one step at a time is a habit I’m still teaching myself.
What advice would you give to young girls looking to do what you're doing?
Take your time in what you’re doing, there’s no rush or need to panic about getting things done immediately. Also try and meet other women in the industry. It’s such a male dominated world and it’s really good to stick together and help each other out through it!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I want to be at a place where I’ve built a bigger fan base and I’m living and working regularly in LA. It’s my second home already and I’m so lucky to have some amazing friends there. I’d also love to be collaborating with Maître Gims of course!
