Orchestrating My Life
"The reason I'm still here is because of the fans..."
Thank you for being a part of our zine Rick. Tell us about the Orchestrating My Life album & why it is so personal to you.
It was a lot of fun to do, but involved a lot of work, matching the vocals to the music of the original tracks, which took time, because I’ve heard re-records and if there’s differences, it really bugs the hell out of me. These singers become so familiar with the song that they’ve ad-libbed all around the world, and had different melodies and everything, so I wanted to keep the inflections and the sound of my voice the same, but with a little more power, I mean I think I’m singing better now than I was back in the eighties, with a little more grip to my voice, but I wanted them to be very reminiscent of the originals, plus with the added power of an orchestra.
What are the major differences in performing with an Orchestra as to performing with a rock band?
It was a great challenge working with an orchestra - a lot of older symphony players don’t really play well with a click track, they have a very organic approach, so tempo issues are always there. And a lot of them don’t really ad lib, because they read music so instinctively, a lot of them haven’t learned to just jam. But we recently did a gig at the Saban with a high school orchestra, Santa Monica High School, and they were amazing, right on the beat, and if I wanted to extend it they could hang with that, you know, if I wanted to extend a couple of bars, so it really depends on the orchestra how much fun it is, but most of them are great though, most of them are really professional and the charts are great so as long as well all stay in time I think it’s good.
17 studio albums and going strong. Did you ever imagine a career that would span so many great years and incredible records?
Well, the reason I’m still here is because of the fans and for no other reason. As I get older, I really understand that more and more, and I’m always trying to do new things to keep it interesting for both them and me, so I hope they enjoy this new record, it’s certainly unexpected from my perspective, and I’ll also be writing more stuff and a new album will be in the works soon. I’m looking forward to coming out and playing for everybody. I have an amazing band and we absolutely kill it live so if you get a chance, don’t miss it, and I hope to see you out there.
What do you want the fans to know about this new tour and what can they expect?
I’m looking forward to coming out and playing for everybody. I have an amazing band and we absolutely kill it live, when you add an orchestra, you obviously add a whole new layer of scale and reach, so I hope fans get a chance to come out and take it all in.s get a chance to come out and take it all in.
