The Free Spirit of Kendra & The Bunnies
Some Q&A with LA's very own KENDRA & THE BUNNIES! Thank you for being with us at Bsquared Magazine today... Please tell us a bit about the origins of KENDRA AND THE BUNNIES!
I am so honored to be featured on the COVER of BSquared Mag! This is my first magazine cover, and I am so excited to be sharing this moment with you! The origins of 'Kendra & the Bunnies' as a feeling came from my absolute love for music and the culture that surrounds live music. My first concert was the Spice Girls at age 4, and I have been hooked ever since. Seeing bands like Dead & Co, The Cure, Metallica, The Doors ft. Marilyn Manson as Jim Morrison, Phish, Gwen Stefani, Blink 182, Kaskade, and more all over the country. I feel so alive in the midst of music and on the stage. I grew up performing in the theatre. Actually, I started studying musical theatre and acting at age 4 too. My love for singing bloomed when I started listening to rock 'n roll music. The title 'Kendra & the Bunnies' is inspired by my infatuation with Alice in Wonderland's White Rabbit, Jefferson Airplane's song "White Rabbit", and overall, the symbols of bunnies in pop-culture like the Playboy bunnies and Bugs Bunny. Rabbits are a nocturnal hyper-aware adorable creature that represents quickness of fruition and expenditure of anxious energy, and I really resonate with that. What can we expect to see when we come to a LIVE KENDRA AND THE BUNNIES show?
I am actually now looking for a full/permanent band to back me. I am seeking bunnies for: lead electric guitar, drums, and bass. Keys would be awesome too. For my most recent album, I featured a rotating roster of artists from all over the country to play on some tracks. So the sound for a full band is there. I, myself, play guitar, sing, and recite spoken word. Oh, and I am working with the ability to launch audio samples from a midi pad and re-learn piano, myself. When you attend a 'Kendra & the Bunnies' show, you can expect magicKal, light, and transcendent-healing energy. I actively channel this spiritual calming energy into my music and presence on stage. You can expect to see me rocking on the guitar (both acoustic and electric), singing passionately (mostly original and some cover songs), and reciting theatrical poetry. This October, I have some shows coming up in Colorado, where I will be playing as a solo singer-songwriter and sitting in to play some songs with a full band at my 10/18 Sunday show at Herman's Hideaway.
Who has been your greatest influence?
I'd say, sonically, Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane has been the most influential for me and my music. I am a big fan of their album "Volunteers", their style of songwriting, overall vibe, and of-course, that they are a 60's band. Favorite notables: "Hey Frederick", "Good Shepherd", and "Wooden Ships".
Grace Slick was also notably outspoken about her perspective on life and society. I speak boldly from a more reserved place, but also with gusto and strong associations of self. She also paints, as do I.
What is your latest and greatest?
My most recent release is my third album titled "of Thank You". It is psychedelic folk rock Americana mixed with spoken word and strong lyricism.
Adding to the picturesque imagery I like to describe for the listener, I have folded in notes of haunting melodic melodies and eerie groove incantations. I take you through a journey of 15 tracks (14 music, 1 spoken word). Overall, it is a concept album, shining a light for the gratitude I feel for where I am from and where I am going. It's a collective sigh of relief for a world gone mad, where nonsense awakens senses of the innocent.
What are you most looking forward to in 2021? I am looking forward to viewing 2020 with a healed heart and from a viewpoint of growth. It has been a truly interesting year, as far as being a creative artist goes -- with lots of time for introspection... I am used to isolating myself for weeks at a time to get personal with my projects, so it felt like a good excuse to do so in many ways. That being said, blessings to all of us around the world during this time. 2021 is going to rock though. I will be presenting my fourth album and an EP of cover songs. I will be publishing my third book of poetry and song lyrics, and hopefully, I will be done with my memoir this upcoming year too! However, "... no writer likes a deadline..." How can we stay up to date with you?
