Talking to Sound Cosmetics About Being a Small Business Owner!!

Hello Sound Cosmetics! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us today!

Thank you for having me!

Tell us about your business and how you got started!

The story of how I got started in my business is actually pretty strange. It was a culmination of many things but it started with a disappointing buying experience.

I had purchased some makeup from a brand that wasn’t high end but it also wasn’t drug store priced. I remember when I received my products; I was super disappointed by the quality. It didn’t meet my expectation of quality for the price. I know that seems really harsh but it’s the truth.

The reason I was pretty upset over it is because I’m really aware of how I spend my money. I value quality. I’m a businesswoman: I look at purchases as investments and return on that investment.

That experience actually led me on a whole journey of researching how makeup was made, what ingredients are used, the process behind everything, and thus Sound Cosmetics was born.

Please tell us about the creative process behind your company!

I personally design the products myself.

Makeup tends to be very trendy but I approach it with longevity in mind. A lot of thought goes into the products that I design.

I ask myself questions like: is this product functional? Is it attractive? Does it have staying power? Is it balanced? Is it unique?

Most importantly: Does it meet my standard of quality, which I admit is pretty high. If it doesn’t, I will not release it.

How do you keep beauty fun and simple?

I personally love to keep beauty simple by focusing on speed! I am a mother of 4 with multiple businesses. I need to look polished very quickly. The need for speed creates resourcefulness and creativity.

And I like to keep beauty fun by encouraging people to apply their makeup based on how THEY feel best. Makeup has a ‘theory’ like the color wheel, etc. but at the end of the day what’s most important is how a person feels.

If they feel happy with their makeup in a certain way, I celebrate and support them.

What is your favorite beauty secret or hack?

My favorite beauty secret is that beauty comes from within. If you do not love yourself, No amount of makeup can mask a lack of self-love and not feeling good enough.

I have created an Inner Beauty Series for my brand to help address these issues and give tools to gain confidence and boost self-esteem.

As for beauty hacks, monochromatic looks are my favorite. They are quick and easy. You’ll be ready and polished in a just a few minutes.

What beauty product you cannot live without?

I would say my Peachie Deluxe palette. It has everything I need for a complete look: shadows, blush, highlighter and contour.

What has been the hardest part about starting a business?

The hardest part of starting a business has been starting. I am a first generation entrepreneur. I have had to develop the resiliency of doing a lot of things without any support.

It’s always scary to do something different and to show others that a different way of living is possible. After you lead and create a new path, it’s easier for others to get onboard and follow.

After that, the second hardest thing would be to hold that ‘Knowing’ that everything will work out. There’s a huge difference between knowing and believing.

Knowing allows you to persevere even if you can’t see what you desire at the moment. You know in your heart that it exists and that you just have to embody it until you see it. As you embody what you desire, you will naturally take action that is aligned with your goals.

Do you have any dream collaborations?

My dream collaboration is actually non makeup related.

I have always felt that children are the key to creating change in the world. And I hope that through my business I am able to fund projects that will focus on children and their personal development.

How often are you creating new products?

I create about 3 to 6 products a year. It really depends on what I feel could serve others and make life easier. Simplicity is usually the answer. Plus I value quality over quantity. So I would rather have less launches but full quality.

What advice would you give to other people who are wanting to create their own businesses?

My best advice would be to get clear on what they want and most importantly:

To define what success and happiness means to THEM.

It’s easy to get caught in the comparison game but do what’s true to your heart and your vision. We are all wonderful in our own unique ways and have so many gifts to bring to the world by embracing our uniqueness.
