We will take all of those, please and thank you!!!!

Hi Cathryn! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us!

Tell us about your business and how you got started!

I primarily make unique statement earrings from polymer clay. I started the business in 2015 as a way to make beer money in grad school. At the time I was selling music and TARDIS-themed knit hats which is where my name came from (bassoonist x Dr. Who nerd). I changed my medium about a year after that to origami jewelry, and then I switched to polymer clay in the Fall of 2020. Since then it’s been polymer clay all the way - it’s such a flexible medium and I feel like it fits me so well!

We absolutely love all your jewelry! Please tell us about your creative process!

I’m inspired constantly - primarily by funky colors and aesthetics in my everyday life, like yarn, fashion, food, album covers, sunsets - I’ve even made a collection inspired by the colors in my shower curtain! I’ve got a crazy vivid imagination and making jewelry has been a wonderful way to translate those ideas into reality.

Do you have a favorite piece of jewelry that you’ve created?

Every new piece of jewelry is my favorite! Most of the time my making process is just as much about exploration and experimentation as it is about carrying out a plan, and if I’m not shocked and excited about what’s on my workbench I’m not inclined to release it. Although… I do have a brand new line called the Fairy Stone Collection that I think is going to end up being a super favorite of mine.

How long does it normally take to make each piece?

That’s hard to say since I make them in batches of 10 or 20 at once… and depending on the technique it can vary from 3-10 hours of work per batch, not including photography and website updates, etc. I really should work that out at some point so I can figure out exactly how I’m valuing my time!

What has been the hardest part about starting a business?

Definitely the admin/marketing side of it. Honestly, if I could just create day in and day out and hand my pieces off to somebody to sell them for me, that would be my dream. Marketing myself and staying on top of clerical stuff does NOT come easy to me, but as a one-woman show, I gotta make it happen! Staying organized and making lists constantly is crucial for me.

Do you have any dream collaborations?

I’d love to design a custom line for Lizzo <3. I have so much respect and love for her as a musician and human and she has such a witty sense of style, I think it would great fun!

How often are you creating new pieces?

As often as I can! I have so many ideas all the time and I’m happiest when I’m working with my hands, so often my favorite downtime activity is just playing around with new colors and designing new cutter shapes.

What advice would you give to other people who are wanting to create their own businesses?

Take the time to figure out why you’re doing what you’re doing and be really clear about it. Write it down and frame it and put it up somewhere visible! You will mature and your aesthetic will change, but staying true to the reason why you’re doing it will keep your heart in your work. People can tell when something is heartfelt or not, even if they don’t know it. And when you believe in what you’re saying or doing, that’s when you make lasting connections with others. And lasting connections, I think, are the key both to a successful business and a happy life.
