The voice of genre-defying Sabrina Carmen has been described as “sultry," buttery," and “pillowy like a feather waltz.” Combine that with cinematic vibes and moody soundscapes, and you find her own brand of alternative dark dream pop.
Where are you located now and where are you originally from?
I am originally from Torrance, CA, lived in West LA for a hot minute, and now my husband and I are based in Long Beach, CA! I’m such a water person and since I grew up along the coast, it’s no surprise I stayed at the beach.
Who has been your greatest influence?
My dad. He is truly young and heart - He has his faults, but I hope when I reach his age (God willing) that I am still as big of a dreamer - learning new things, staying creative, staying healthy and living life to the fullest.
What is your latest and greatest?
My newest single “Shh I Won’t Tell” will be released on October 15th! It’s a cinematic dark pop song that dances with secrets, attempts to find answers, and perhaps haunts listeners with even more questions. ’Tis the season for pumpkin spice and scary movie nights, so Halloween felt like the perfect timing to share this one :)
Are you performing LIVE soon?
Next up is a virtual performance for Erez Safar’s “Don’t Block Your Blessings” Festival! Details coming soon.
What are you most looking forward to in 2022?
I’m looking forward to a safer, healthier world. Hopefully, we can all hit the ground running in 2022, and officially get back to normal!
How did you deal with all the changes in the past two years that the music industry has gone through?
I did my best to stay as creative as possible and the time away from society actually gave me a good amount of time to reflect on what’s truly important to me. I made some major changes, such as my artist name - I was previously going by the moniker MadLyn (in honor of my mom who passed away from breast cancer when I was 13), and had a whole artistic period in my life dedicated to that name and that brand. During the 2020 pandemic, I realized that it was time for me to be Sabrina again, and I started releasing music under my own name. I came to the conclusion that I didn’t have to use my mom’s name in order to honor her, but rather, I could do so by being the kind of woman she would have wanted me to be.
What would you say to your younger self if you could?
Be kind to yourself, and give yourself grace. Stay driven and make plans, but be present in the moment because life is happening right now. Define what success means for you and your life. That might be different than what others want or say it should be.
On a scale from ONE to TEN, how driven are you?
In general, I would say I’m a pretty driven person, but if I’m honest, sometimes that drive varies. I go through phases that are sometimes more productive than others, but in phases where I’m not doing as much musically, it’s usually because I’m needing to focus on other projects/areas of life - I think it all balances out in the end :) If I had to pick a number, I’d say between 7 and 8.
When you're not feeling motivated how do you get back on track?
I try to give myself grace and allow myself to take those intentional breaks - we all need that, and when we take breaks, it helps us rest up and refuel for whatever projects we have next. If I’m in a funk though that’s gone on for too long, listening to some of my favorite artists, watching inspiring documentaries, brain dumping my thoughts in a journal, or even working out or all ways that can help stimulate creativity and productivity. Sometimes we just need a change of scenery.
How much do you believe LUCK plays a role in success?
Luck definitely plays a role in all of this, but what I think plays a bigger role is how consistent you are. Staying present, working on projects, and sharing them with the world is the best way for like-minded people to hear your art, and potentially resonate with it. You have to be out there for people to find you, so I think that’s the key.
How can we stay up to date with you?
