Pennan Brae is a Vancouver based singer/ songwriter whose music is influenced by the Rock & Roll music of th 70's and 80's. And he stopped by Bsquared Mag to talk about everything he has going on right NOW!

Thank you for taking this interview! How has the New Year been for you so far as an artist?

The New Year has been alright, thanks. I’ve been recording a new album. 4 of the new singles have already been released with the full 10-track album set for release May 20. It’s called, ‘The Garden Series, Vol. 2: Picked’ and is the second half of a double album.

Can you tell us how you've transformed from the beginning to now as an artist?

At the start everything was new of course; the recording process for example. But It was a wonderful period of exploration for I was feeling things out and it was all very exciting. We’re continuing to strive for that feeling by experimenting in the studio and doing things differently. It’s all very stimulating and essential in the creative process. There’s still so much to learn; it’s an exhilarating and never-ending road ahead.

How did you come up with your latest project?

I was in the music studio and had written a lot of songs. We had 20 tracks going at the time. I’ve always been a fan of double albums and thought what a dream it would be to record and release one. So the producer and I put 10 songs on each album and away we went. We made a beautiful 4-panel series of album art for the front and back covers of each volume with photographer Dan Jackson. When placed successively, they tell a story.

Where are you from originally?

I’m from London, Ontario, a city 2 hours south of Toronto.

Where do you live now?

I live in Vancouver, BC.

Do you think where you live impacts how your music is made?

I don’t think so. To me it’s the emotions withing which directs the music.

What was the inspiration to make music your career?

It’s the only thing I feel natural at and want to do. The songwriting process provides a great outlet for channeling one’s emotions and experiences in a constructive way.

How do you want to shape your career?

I want to continue recording and releasing albums and perform them live. I’d like to also keep making music videos for the songs I make.

Do you work on a tight timeline always or do you go with the flow when it comes to your music?

A bit of both. I like to keep working regularly for it’s healthy and good practise. But you’ve also got to let go and let creativity flow. When that happens, unexpected surprises can arise and then you’ve got to pursue them.

How did your latest title of your music come to be?

The album title came from the photography shoot I did with Vancouver photographer Dan Jackson. In the 4-panel photo-series, we incorporated a gardening theme. In the first image, a hand ‘plants’ a guitar pick-up into the soil. The next photograph has the headstock of an electric guitar shooting up through the ground. The 3rd photo reveals the neck of a guitar as it reaches toward the sun. And the final photo features a musician plucking the guitar from the earth and walking off with it. Hence, the titles of each album are ‘Planted’ and ‘Picked’ and they are both volumes in ‘The Garden Series’. The first 2 photos are the front and back album covers of Vol. 1 while the 3rd and 4th photo comprise Vol. 2’s artwork.

Is it hard to let go of the music when it is done?

Not at all. To the contrary it feels deeply satisfying to complete and release a song.

Do you feel an emotional attachment to your music?

Most definitely. Every song has its own identity and personality; they feel like different children in a way. They each represent a different experience in my life.

How would you describe your music in one word to someone who hasn't listened to it yet?

What has been the best fan reaction to your music?

Is there anything exciting coming up for you?

My next album release is May 20. The album is called ‘The Garden Series, Vol. 2: Picked’ and is the second half of a double album. The first half (Vol. 1) is called ‘Planted’. There are 10 songs on the album with the lead singles being ‘Zulu’, ‘Super Storm’ and ‘5 Foot 2’ and I hope people enjoy them. I’ve made 2 music videos for the first 2 songs.

Are you performing the song anywhere LIVE?
