my friends call me Mel

Get to know the artist behind the name!

Where are you located now and where are you originally from? I am currently located in Oahu, Hawaii but originally from Katy, TX. Who has been your greatest influence? All the women in music that raised me and the ones presently shape me to feel my feelings, express it honestly, and carry myself with confidence/power to continue chasing the dream. Powerhouse women from growing up like Sara Bareilles, Kelly Clarkson, Ingrid Michaelson, And Hayley Williams and women more recently like Maggie Rogers, Ashe, Taylor Swift, and Julia Michaels. What is your latest and greatest? My latest release was my pop alternative ‘Get Over You’ on June 25 and shortly before that I released a more sonically dreamy, moving pop song called ‘Wildflowers’ on April 16. What are you most looking forward to this year? As I continue to work with my collaborator and producer Stephen Hall, we are hoping to have two more singles released before the end of the year and more into the next year. Each song I’m releasing has its own unique voice - cohesive to my vision to ‘create music that feels like a friend’ while sonically it still resonates around pop but seeks to dip into some sub genres of cinematic pop, rock, soul, and more. What would you say to your younger self if you could? You are not going to be for everybody and that’s okay. Your job is not to impress and please everyone. It’s to continue discovering who you are and being unapologetically Mel and that’s enough. On a scale from ONE to TEN, how driven are you? I’d like to say a 10 when it comes to music but of course, it seems most people have our days creatively where we are battling the weight of anxiety, apathy, and an overwhelming sense to produce better and more - that the task seems daunting. The important thing is to keep getting up and pick up the songwriting pen again. Comparison and competition is the thief of the beauty of collaboration in this industry. When you're not feeling motivated how do you get back on track? I take “brainstorm” walks where I either listen to some familiar music I enjoy or listen to the world around me. I jot things down in my notes app or sing melodies into my voice memo. One songwriting professor at Belmont University told us that there is no lack of inspiration - it’s found everywhere if we would only take time to look and listen... get out of our own heads. How much do you believe LUCK plays a role in success? I’m sure there are many success stories that are “right place at the right time” situations but for me, I don’t think anything by coincidence. I think hard work and continuing to follow (and act on!!) your passion can position you in rooms with people who see your potential. You can manage to draw those equally passionate people to you.
