OR aka Olivier & Roland!
The duo began when two young men went through their own personal journey in the world of music, debuting in France in the early 90’s.
Whilst Olivier was stepping into to the dj scenes and making his marks in the electronic music world, Roland was improving his instrumentalist crafts whether that would be with a guitar piano or percussions - mostly influenced by funk music.
Highly dedicated and passionate about music, as well as the music industry, they both developed their talents playing at many music events including festivals, clubs, concerts and radio stations alongside great names and artists from the electronic music scene.
In the 2000, a pivotal moment for OR, they moved to London where they got to meet.In the competitive world of London’s music they earned the right to perform regular gigs at some the most prestigious London venues.
Inevitably the two members of what will soon become “OR” made their entry in the world of music production, alongside their djing activities by releasing many projects under their own names, whilst also performing as DJs - more than often in the same events.
Most recently they decided to embark in a new musical journey with “OR” breaking barriers between music genres, in other words they aimed to combine their music knowledge, musical influences and background to form “OR”. Perfectly combining a touch a funk, disco and house music in their musical expression OR music art form will resonate with a wide audience.
Thank you for taking this interview! How has the New Year been for you so far as an artist? The new year has been very good for OR. We got various projects signed up by labels like ModjoHeadz, Rare Wiri records, Kraak, Hot Gorilla to name a few. We’ve also been approached by other artists to do remix versions of their own tracks.
So yes, I'm very happy about how things are going at the moment.
Can you tell us how you've transformed from the beginning to now as an artist? Music has always taken a big part of our everyday life since our young age . We just learned along the way to use the tools to express it . Whether that would be an instrument, Dj set or a DAW .
We both always got involved in different projects like Dj sessions or producing a track . But it was more of a « weekend thing ».
Then comes the Pandemic, and the lockdown. With all that free time in our hands we were able to make music every day for hours. We think the lockdown has been a very good thing for OR. How did you come up with your latest project? We have few projects coming out soon starting mid May. A couple of remixes of a previous OR and Olivier’s tracks signed by Rare Wiri and Kraak respectively « Whatever Forever » Featuring Andy Touch and « Imagine yourself » featuring Lorena Dale. As well as a new original track « Get Down » signed by Hot Gorilla . Our project always starts with one of us having an idea of a song, even the simplest one. Then we both work on it by passing the project back and forth between both of us . Until we get the final touch and we’re both happy about it. Where are you from originally? Olivier is from France Roland is from Madagascar. Where do you live now?
We’ve both being living In London (UK) for many years now Do you think where you live impacts how your music is made? Definitely! It’s London !!
Besides, we’ve both been DJing in some of the biggest clubs here. Roland has still got his residency at the Bar social in Southwest London What was the inspiration to make music your career?
The first live music show , first time DJing in front of a crowd, those are defining moments.
How do you want to shape your career? Being the most sought after producers by having an OR signature sound . Collaboration with the big guns in music. Do you work on a tight timeline always or do you go with the flow when it comes to your music?
We usually do work on a tight timeline ! As well as working on different projects at once. That’s where the fun is! How did your latest title of your music come to be?
You better start with Olivier’s idea then Roland and Olivier for the instrumental as well as the arrangement then Z’Maji with that excellent vocal. https://open.spotify.com/album/5HEj3HBOse1fOqes6cNlYe?si=pyXYcLevS7KB84K9esNobQ Is it hard to let go of the music when it is done?
There’s always the feeling that something can be improved that’s for sure . Do you feel an emotional attachment to your music?
Always! We know them inside out. Listened to every single instrument involved. Bar by bars bits by bits you have to be emotionally involved. How would you describe your music in one word to someone who hasn't listened to it yet?
