Jaxsen is a twenty-year-old artist currently based in Louisville, Kentucky. Jaxsen has released two projects before, ‘drywall’ and ‘becoming content’, and is gearing up for a new release, ‘impose’!

Thank you for taking this interview! How has the New Year been for you so far as an artist?

As an artist, this has been my best year yet! I’ve never felt more inspired and confident in my art as I do now.

Can you tell us how you've transformed from the beginning to now as an artist?

My evolution as an artist has coincided with my evolution as a person. Some of the things I struggle with are the same, but my viewpoint on them has changed. It’s interesting to listen back to ‘drywall’ and hear what I was feeling and how I chose to put it into song.

How did you come up with your latest project?

My latest project, ‘impose’, was originally started at the beginning of quarantine. My brother and I would take weekly trips to Chick-fil-A together and it was always so relaxing and fun. One day though, I was feeling pretty sad and I knew he could tell. Which made me feel even worse because I felt like I was putting my problems onto him, even though I didn’t want or mean to at all. When we got home, I scurried off to my room and started ‘impose’.

Where are you from originally?

Long story, haha! I was originally born in Ohio, before moving to Missouri when I was two or three years old. I lived there until I was nine, which is when we moved to Kentucky. We all lived in Kentucky until I moved to Chicago for a year after I graduated high school. After that year, I moved back to Kentucky.

Where do you live now?

Currently I am based in Louisville, Kentucky.

Do you think where you live impacts how your music is made?

I think it does. Had I lived anywhere else during any other part of my life, I think my music would be totally different, as my life experiences would be as well, and that’s what inspires the art.

What was the inspiration to make music your career?

I just love making things. Creating art is the one thing I am passionate about in life and I don’t think there will ever come a day where I stop.

How do you want to shape your career? I hope that my career takes the shape of the people that need it. That’s why I put out music, to hopefully have it reach someone who has also felt the same things. It’s always a comforting feeling to know you’re not alone, and I hope to spread that feeling.

Do you work on a tight timeline always or do you go with the flow when it comes to your music?

I really go with the flow with things. ‘drywall’ and ‘becoming content’ came out in 2020, so it’s been about 2 years since I’ve released a project. Given this long gap, I hope and believe the new songs will be worth the wait.

How did your latest title of your music come to be?

The title for ‘impose’ comes from its chorus. The word is really powerful to me for some reason. To force someone to deal with your own problems is a lot. I think it's the only word that adequately shows how remorseful I feel.

Is it hard to let go of the music when it is done?

It is a bit difficult to do! It’s scary to let this little piece of art you’ve lived with for months go into the hands of the world. But I know that in the end, it feels amazing releasing something you love.

Do you feel an emotional attachment to your music?

I do! All of my songs have very distinct memories in my head of when I was making them. ‘impose’ was finished back in December, while my life was going through some major renovations. I love listening to it and time traveling back to such an important time for me.

How would you describe your music in one word to someone who hasn't listened to it yet?

Where do they go to listen NOW?

You can listen on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, anywhere!

What has been the best fan reaction to your music?

Probably any reaction that my biggest fan and good friend Cait has given. She is the one I always send my music to as I make it and hearing her feedback means the world. She truly is what has kept me making music!

Is there anything exciting coming up for you?

Yes! ‘impose’ is releasing tonight! And the projects I have upcoming are some of my best stuff yet and I’m so excited for them. Big things are coming!

Are you performing the song anywhere LIVE?

No plans yet… but I am open to it!
