Todd Lunceford won First Place in the 2020 International Songwriting Competition for the “Lyrics Only” category with his song “Before We Were Kings.” I had the opportunity to interview the great songwriter, Todd Lunceford, on his inspiration to write the song that won him first place, his musical career and his plans for the future!
Where are you originally from? Where are you located now?
I was born in Battle Creek, Michigan. Now I am living in Orlando, Florida.
When did you decide that you wanted to pursue a career as a musician?
When I was ten, living in Italy, I saw a painting in a Church that moved me a great deal. I had no idea at the time how I could stir emotion in others the way that painting did for me, only that I wanted to do the same. Later in life, In my early 20s, I read a book written by A.J. Cronin, that impacted me the same way as that painting. I knew then that I wanted to write.
What genre of music do you consider yourself to be?
I don't write in any particular style. When I get an idea or inspiration for a song, my writing takes on the characteristics of the mood of the song. Kinda like being possessed I guess you could say.
What was your inspiration for writing the song that you submitted for the International Songwriting Competition?
My inspiration for "Before we were Kings" was seeing (too many times) the icon of the Corona Virus cell on TV. The cell looks like a crown, thus the name Corona. My first thought was,"I never asked for this crown," and the song wrote itself.
What do you hope for listeners to take away after listening to your song/music?
Selfishly, first I would hope that people take away the thought that I can write, and write well. (What artist doesn't like having their ego stroked)
Secondly, I would like to feel that people take away a sense of relatability to my songs, that they have been there too.
What is your favorite song that you’ve released and why?
I guess "Before we were Kings" would be my favorite release since this is the first time I have released anything.
Who were your favorite musicians growing up? Do you feel that they played a role in influencing your music today?
As a child, it was all country music in my house. George Jones, Dolly Parton, Charlie Rich, Charlie Pride were a few of my favorites.
Then it was Van Halen, Pink Floyd, INXS, 80s rock. R.E.M. is an all time favorite. Really appreciate the lyrics of TOOL.
Do you have any new projects that you are working on?
Working with some musician friends on tracking some of the 40 or 50 songs I have written, with the goal of writing for some of the bigger names in music.
Are you planning on touring/performing any shows in the near future?
The only playing out I have done is a dozen or so "open MICs.” Kinda hard to start booking gigs when you only know about 8 or 10 covers. Only so many times the audience wants to hear the Monkeys in a set.
Keep an eye out for the name Todd Lunceford, "Before We Were Kings" will be his first release in his promising songwriting career!!
