Get to Know Leah Hinton!

Where are you located now and where are you originally from?

I'm currently located in Queens, NY and originally from the small town of Henderson, NC. Who has been your greatest influence? I have many, but to name a few - I grew up listening to a lot of Alicia Keys. As a kid, I loved her because she could sing and play piano and that's what I was doing a lot of when at that time. Another great influence was and still is Whitney Houston. She is a beautiful singer and an incredible powerhouse. To me she is the perfect artist and singer. Others are Sarah Vaughan, Sammy Davis Jr, Diana Ross, Erykah Badu and Ledisi. But there are literally so many artists that have influenced me. What is your latest and greatest?

I write all my music and lyrics, but also love to collaborate with other artists and musicians. My latest work is my new single called Away, released on Sept. 24th, featuring rapper and fellow Berklee College of Music classmate Jordon Peace. The song and music video are definitely near and dear to me and I am very happy with it and it's reception even already. I have another song coming out in a few months called S.K.I.N. and it is one of my favorite songs I've done. Both songs were produced by the amazing Daniel "DocJunya" Hargrove. I love the instrumentation of the track and the sweet melodies. My other favorite songs are from my 2015 EP Sonkissed. I love all of those songs, but my favorites are Fly written with Smarly Bazille and Love's Cry. I love the message and the way the song evolved due to the amazing musicians that played on it with me. They really took my ideas and made them come alive. Are you performing LIVE soon?

Yes! I have my release party on October 24th. I'll be performing and sharing my new song's official music video. What are you most looking forward to in 2022?

I'm looking forward to new connections, performances and releasing more music. I have a second song and video coming early 2022, which I am very excited about. After that my debut album will be on the way, which will be produced by Ray Angry of The Roots. I can't wait! How did you deal with all the changes in the past two years that the music industry has gone through? Thankfully, I was still able to work. I teach music online and I was able to continue that. I did sing here and there, mostly private gigs. I was able to work on music and I got into a routine of regular exercise consistently for the first time in my life. I am very proud of that! Hahah. I was able to work on forming some great habits and plan for my music releases. Even though I enjoy my alone time, I did of course experience some loneliness. But reaching out to friends and family and spending quality time with God definitely helped with that. Overall, there were some lows, but the highs definitely outweigh. Musically, I spent more time working on my voice and learned more about music production, which I am still learning. I am working to produce more and get better at producing my own music. The time also allowed for me to collaborate with some folks since we all had the time. What would you say to your younger self if you could? I would say you are doing great. Just keep going and never give up. Continue to work on your craft and go through with as many ideas as you can. Don't delay, just do it all and see where it gets you. Stay close to God, your family and cherished friends. I would say this to myself now as well hahah On a scale from ONE to TEN, how driven are you?

Wow, great question. Hmm, I would love to say a TEN. I would definitely say my level of commitment to my dreams and goals is a TEN as I will never give up. But I think I can grow in the timing of where I place my drive. I sometimes hesitate on certain things that I should just go for or procrastinate to plan carefully because I have so many ideas and don't know where to start. So, I would say my drive is about an EIGHT. It's great, but there is still room to grow. When you're not feeling motivated how do you get back on track? I take a step back, rest, reflect on past successes and find gratitude for the now, and find inspiration from friends, family, God, nature, performers I love, songs I love to listen to, poetry, films and anything creative. Making a plan of what I need to get done and small steps to achieving helps a great deal too. As I mentioned before, I get so many ideas sometimes and don't know where to start and that can leave you feeling stuck and unmotivated. But finding some clarity on how to get it done is what I know I need to do. Getting out of the house helps too. Taking a walk to a park or lake or going to see a live concert helps rejuvenate me. Then writing a list and planning helps bring the clarity you need to get it done. How much do you believe LUCK plays a role in success?

NONE. I believe when you prepare yourself for opportunities God was already preparing opportunities for you and when the time comes you are presented those opportunities. And through His grace sometimes He places you in great opportunities that you may not feel ready and prepares you during that opportunity, even possibly preparing you for something else as well. So, no luck - just God. How can we stay up to date with you? You can sign up for my email list to stay updated. You can do that by going to my website Leahhinton.com and entering your email address.
