Igor Volhonski, who goes by the stage name Hellove, won Third Place in the International Songwriting Competition for the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) category. Igor won Third Place with the song, “I Got You,” which features Gloria Kim on lead vocals. Hellove produces incredible music that has high energy, great beats, meaningful lyrics and awesome instrumentals. I had the opportunity to interview Igor Volhonski, aka Hellove, about his music and his future projects.
Where are you originally from? Where are you located now?
Hey there! I am from Estonia, a nice and cozy place right next to Sweden and Finland.
When did you decide that you wanted to pursue a career as a musician?
I started playing the guitar at the age of 11. I formed my first band when I was 19, called Saints Be Warned. A total metalcore band, haha… those were the days! My goal back then was to be the best metal guitarist I could be. But after about 2 years we split up and I decided to start producing music and pursuing it with as much energy as I could.
Who is your biggest influence/inspiration to become a musician?
During the rock/metal times I was influenced by Metallica and Asking Alexandria. Later in the EDM scene I was really inspired by San Holo, Odesza and Illenium.
What genre of music do you consider yourself to be?
I always try out different genres but if I had to choose it would be cinematic electronic music.
What was your inspiration for writing the song that you submitted for the International Songwriting Competition?
It was actually one of the first songs written for Hellove. Before writing “I Got You” I was playing around with a lot of cinematic stuff and writing 10 minute instrumental pieces. I somehow turned back to pop music and felt I could lay down something new for myself in the genre. I remember feeling a sense of discovering a new world where everything I ever wanted was on the other side.
What do you hope for listeners to take away after listening to your song/music?
That it’s okay to feel down and be lost sometimes. That’s when we find ourselves and learn to grow.
What is your favourite song that you’ve released and why?
I guess it’s “Off The Edge.” I really went out and showed my darker emotions, it Made me face myself and accept who I am. I definitely feel a sense of freedom after it.
Who were your favourite musicians growing up? Do you feel that they played a role in influencing your music today?
Yeah they do influence me to this day. I’d say “Off The Edge” was inspired by Linkin Park, Nirvana and 30 Seconds to Mars. I listened to a lot of metal music when I was growing up.
If you could collaborate with any musician throughout history, who would you choose and why?
Oh wow. Throughout history? I think it would be Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. “Off The Edge” was heavily influenced by him and his struggles. The world lost a beautiful soul. I think I would have a blast writing stuff with him if it were possible.
Do you have any new projects that you are working on?
Yes! There is so much in the works and I can’t wait to show what’s to come. At the moment I am experimenting with instrumental music, I feel I have a lot to show to the world from there.
Are you planning on touring/performing any shows in the near future?
At the moment it is all about finding my sound and then start playing live. I don’t want to just play music off a DJ set but would rather create something new and meaningful for people to experience. I have a lot of ideas how to do it but would need to release more songs in order to bring them to life.
