To know the music of MIA AYANA is to LOVE MIA! Check out her latest songs here! Finding my authentic voice with music has been one of the most challenging aspects of my journey as an artist. Music is always changing.. evolving, especially R&B, and with that comes endless opportunities to break your way into the industry, but for someone who hasn’t found their sound, that constant change can be really tough. I found mine by trial and error. Listening to myself—studying in intricate detail the songs and artists I admired most—from the song writing all the way down to each element inside of the song itself.
I also learned that my journey is mine alone and it can’t be compared to anyone else’s.I stopped comparing my process to others when I realized it was limiting my capabilities as an artist. It’s important to appreciate your personal process. For me, this includes creative blocks, long nights recording, randomly waking up with song ideas, trying to learn the business side of music, stressing and crying bc it’s all so much to do alone— this is what it’s about, though. Growth. Pressure creates diamonds they say. I love the pressure. It’s necessary.
Additionally, to really find your voice, you gotta face some really ugly sides of yourself and that goes into spirituality, mental health, desire for knowledge and understanding the world around you. Finding yourself in life helps you find yourself in music. At least that was the case for me. When I started, I didn’t know who I was. My music reflected that. Today, I do.. and you can hear it.
I think as artists, a lot of times we’re so determined to create an image that we forget one already lies inside of us, waiting to come to fruition. That was the case for me, and while I’m still at the very beginning of my journey, I can say refocusing my attention to qualities that contribute to my overall health really helps me with singing. It helps with the words I write, the mood of the song and so much more. You gotta take care of yourself before you can do anything else. Self care is so important. I can't stress it enough.
Finding your most authentic self spiritually, mentally, and emotionally as a person will present to you your most authentic self and voice as an artist.
