A Star Is Born
TED Talks and future moves with a young mogul in the making...
Hello Megan! Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started.
I am a 2x TED talk speaker, #1 Best selling author on amazon, Afterbuzz TV host, Anxiety advocate for teens & Podcast host. I started my business when I had just turned 20, I left College to pursue my passions. I was never into academics, but I always loved being on stage. I did acting, drama class and the school plays all throughout my schooling as well as dance and sports. I loved entertaining others and being active! It helped my anxiety a ton! At first when I started motivational speaking, I made a youtube channel, made business cards and would walk around to schools all day long and go door-to-door like a business lady. I would make hundreds of phone calls, emails and met with school principals back-to-back. I spoke at YMCA's, Boys & Girls Clubs and any place that needed a speaker, for free. I created my speaking reel. I attended toastmaster public speaking meetings three times per week and really dove headfirst into my calling. It was the best time in my life though because, starting my own business and holding myself accountable taught me more about life than any schooling ever did. It felt so amazing the whole time, because I knew deep down I was following my dreams and I have never been happier. Truly, If you meet me in person or see me in a grocery store- I'll likely be dancing or twirling haha because that's how I am. Always super bubbly, happy, positive and tons of energy!
What keeps you motivated!?
What motivates me is doing it for my younger self. When I was a teenager, I struggled with severe/chronic anticipatory anxiety and panic attacks. I will never forget the feeling of sitting in my high school assemblies watching these adults come in and talk about, "Say no to drugs" or "Get into this ivy league college and you'll be set for life". I would sit there battling a panic attack while keeping a poker face and just feeling like, "This person talking right now isn't mentioning mental health issues, self care or how to follow your dreams... so I guess I'm the only person in this room feeling anxious, insecure and overwhelmed with my future". I just hold onto that feeling because it fuels me to not give up and keep going. I want to show teenagers that you can be successful and follow your dreams even if you have anxiety.
Who are your inspirations?
Oh my gosh! I have so many! I love Ashley Graham, Marie Forleo, Oprah Winfrey, Tony Robbins, Kristin Cavallari, Camille Kostek, Rachel Hollis, Hunter McGrady & Lauren Conrad. I love fashion, blogging, making fun vlogs/youtube videos, speaking, traveling.... you name it! I just love talking. Honestly, I could talk for hours! I love Jessie James Decker too! She has the best style and she is so talented.
What do you love most about following your passion?
Just how great it feels. I had a psychic reading a few years ago, and I will never forget what the lady said to me. She said, "Megan, you are here on earth in this lifetime as an instrument of the universe. You are here to help others. The universe is using you as a channel for raising the vibration of the planet. You are literally here to spread compassion and joy to those in pain". Which makes so much sense to me, because my whole life I have always loved helping others. Speaking being my favorite!
Your greatest achievements so far?
I would say my greatest achievement is getting my first TED talk... It took so long yet it happened when it was meant to! I worked so hard for it and my parents came to see me on stage and I spoke in front of 1,500 people! It is literally my purpose on earth. Every time I speak, I go into this trance where I just start channeling and I don't ever remember it! I When I want something, I don't stop until I get it. No matter how long it takes. I am a very focused, self-driven person! I can honestly motivate myself in like five minutes.
Any challenges along the way?
For me, it's been just continually trusting that EVERYTHING happens for a reason. I am really spiritual and I believe in a higher power that makes the world work the way it does. So it makes me feel better knowing that I should work as hard as possible, but also to let god do some work. I think timing is everything, I mean it took me two years to get my first TED talk. I filled out six applications online everyday for two years!
What advice would you give someone else following in your footsteps?
Literally do NOT give up. When one door closes, open about 500 more. To just keep going, and be persistent, I got the ball rolling for 4.5 years straight non stop and just NOW, my career at 24 is taking off. You have to see, feel the vision of where you want to be first- then just work hard! Work smart though, I still get 8.5 hours of sleep every night and exercise every morning before work. It's a marathon, not a sprint- so remember to not burn yourself out and listen to your body. Motivational speaking is a very giving job, you are exuding so much energy and moving so for me, after I have a whole self care routine.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I see myself running a badass female brand like Rachel Hollis, Jessie James Decker, Olivia Culpo, Joanna Gaines or Lauren Conrad. I will be a New York Times best selling author, influencer, lifestyle blogger, designer, traveling motivational speaker selling out arenas across the world, married to an NFL football player and living on a gorgeous property in Tennessee with 5 kids. I also want to be an E! news daily pop host! I love that show. Truly anything with being in front of a camera and sharing advice/positivity is my JAM!
