AHA Moments And...
Gorgeous Three Dimensional
Thank you for being part of our zine. Tell us more about your beginnings in the industry!
Going back to a psychic in college who pronounced that I would be in a three dimensional art form, I dropped out of college where I was painting. Shortly there after while working in retail I gravitated towards a small case of jewelry for sale in a leather goods store. It seemed as if every sale I made was from that case and I was captivated by the gemstones I had admired on my grandmothers wrist all of my child hood life. The best coincidence was six months later when the owner of that jewelry collection opened his own store right next to the leather goods store, and hired me the minute I walked in to say hello.
When did you know the art of fine jewelry would be your passion in life?
Three weeks after working in this small jewelry boutique in Westwood, I had already begun to customize and design the jewelry for my clients. That is when I had that aha moment, that I had found my three dimensional art form that the psychic directed me to. Clearly I had found my passion because within three years I had learned the wholesale, retail and custom fine jewelry end of the business. Lastly, I opened two stores in Southern California, 23rd Street Jewelers, with a 38 year history.
Where are you located now and where are you originally from?
I was born in Los Angeles, and I live in Los Angeles.
Goals for 2019 and beyond?
The other passion in my life has always been art, and collecting was something I learned through a UCLA course that introduced me to the local Venice Beach artists and their studios. I have continued the passion of collecting for the last 30 years. My plans are to combine my love of jewelry and art collecting, and create a business around supporting emerging artists in both fields.
What have been the specific challenges in your career so far? What have been the greatest achievements so far?
The greatest challenges have been the shifting economy, and how that impacts every business but particularly a luxury brand business. 23rd Street Jewelers has been through three stock market crashes, two earthquakes, 9-11, fires, and robberies. We have prevailed through all these events. Our greatest achievement by far is the significance of 38 years in business, and the shear magnitude of the clients and jewelry we have created for them. Opening our second store in Manhattan beach was also a peak experience in the history of 23rd Street Jewelers.
Where can our readers catch up with you out there soon?
