Deidre &
The Dark

NOIR POP and Cinematic 60's

Thank you for being part of our zine.  Tell us about this interesting band name, where did it come from?

Thank you for having me! I started this project as a place to tell stories about female characters and archetypes, and to find out how those classic images fit in today’s world. The name reflects my role as a narrator, jumping from character to character between songs. As for “the Dark,” there is indeed a noir side to a lot of my music, but I also like to think of it as the unknown, a mysterious void where any story is possible.

Where are you located and where are you originally from?

I have lived in Brooklyn, New York for 12 years, and I grew up on Long Island in a town called St. James.

Top musical influences?

There have been so many, but here are a few: my Dad’s record collection while growing up which included a big range from The Beatles to Peter Gabriel to Vanilla Fudge, jazz standards & vocalists, 60s French pop & yeye girls, 80s dreams like The Cure and Cocteau Twins, film composers like Nino Rota, Bernard Herrmann & Michel Legrand, and crate diggers/DJs from the late 90s through 00s.

Goals for 2019 and beyond?

A big dream-come-true is that we will be releasing my brand new album “Variety Hour” on vinyl! It’s in production right now. I also would like to do more collaborations with artists & producers I admire. Beyond 2019, I’m dreaming up a way to share my passion for all things mid century and music inspired by that era. I’ll keep my plans hush hush for now, but more on that soon...

Which comes first for you the lyrics or the musical inspo?

The writing process really can vary from song to song - sometimes there is a specific character or a story I want to tell, so the concept comes first. But a lot of the time, there is a musical vibe or nugget that I’ve fallen in love with, so I will build that up first and the lyrics will dutifully follow.

Where can our readers catch a live show soon?

Our next show is March 5th at Rockwood Music Hall in New York as part of the Communion NYC residency.
